OAS-Inventory

A HERITAGE INVENTORY IS THE KEY TO PROTECTING SHARED HISTORY

The aim of the St. Christopher National Register is to map, document, and share with the general
public many of the most important historical buildings, landscapes, and places of St. Kitts.
Why do we need such a National Register and inventory? There are at least four important reasons
why such a project is important:

1. Risk Management and Disaster Recovery: Heritage is unique and irreplaceable. Without an accurate listing, photos, and descriptions of our important heritage places, their repair and restoration after a natural or man-made disaster is impossible.

2. Monitoring and safeguarding: Time and the environment are powerful forces that can degrade and eventually destroy historical sites that are carefully tended. An inventory will identify the places that should be regularly monitored.

3. Honoring the culture and history of St. Kitts: many places that played an important role in the history of St. Kitts and its people are scarcely known or unrecorded. The Register will provide an opportunity to raise public awareness about the extent of Kittitian heritage.

4. Encouraging visitation and transmitting knowledge: Visitors, local residents, and especially the younger generation can greatly benefit from a broader picture of the sites and historical landscapes of St. Kitts. Our legacy is diminished when important places are forgotten.

HONOR A KITTITIAN HERITAGE SITE

BY NOMINATING IT TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER

The mission of the St. Christopher National Trust is to preserve and promote the natural, cultural, and historical heritage of St. Kitts.

An important step in this preservation process is the establishment of a National Register of Heritage Places, a project being funded by the United States Mission to the Organisation of American States.

The general public, as well as private institutions, government, or the National Trust itself are eligible to nominate historic places that possess at least one of the following significant characteristics:

  • Association with historic events or activities
  • Association with important persons
  • Distinctive design or physical characteristics
  • Potential to provide important information about prehistory or history

An advisory committee comprised of experts in the fields of archaeology, architecture, history, property law, and historic conservation will review all nominations.

The participation of private citizens in the nomination process is warmly encouraged!

If you are interested in having a property nominated for listing to the National Register, please contact the office of the National Trust for more information.
